Coneflower Prairie Project Moves Forward2 weeks ago
In 2007, the Linnaeus Arboretum at Gustavus Adolphus College received a grant from the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation to help develop a new 70-acre prairie on the west side of the arboretum. The development of the new “Coneflower Prairie” took a significant step forward earlier this fall when the planting process was initiated by Feder’s Prairie Seed Co. of Blue Earth, Minn.

Football Player T.J. Ridley Named To CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America TeamGustavus Adolphus College football player T.J. Ridley, a junior safety from Edina, Minn., has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Second Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Ridley, who carries a 3.96 grade point average with a major in Biology and Pre-Med, finished the season with 38 tackles (18 solo), two interceptions, and 1.5 tackles for loss. He is also a forward on the Golden Gustie men’s hockey team.
Men’s Basketball Loses 75-59 To Division II Winona StateThe Gustavus Adolphus College men’s basketball team shot over 50 percent from the field, but was unable to overcome 15 turnovers in a 75-59 loss to defending NCAA Division II champion Winona State University on Saturday night in Winona. The Gusties were 25-of-48 shooting for 52.1 percent compared to 50 percent shooting for the Warriors. However, Winona State scored 22 points on Gustie miscues and converted 18-of-23 at the free throw line.
The Gustavus women’s basketball team moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 69-56 win over Southwestern University at Austin College in Sherman, Texas on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back on their way to a 13-point victory. Three Gustavus players scored in double figures including Emily Nelson and Molly Mathiowetz with 12 points and Bri Radtke with 11.
The Gustavus women’s basketball team opened its 2008-09 season with a 79-64 win over Austin College at the Austin/Southwestern Thanksgiving Classic in Sherman, Texas. Junior post Katie Layman led the Gusties with 28 points including 11-of-16 shooting from the field. Gustavus will play Southwestern University on Saturday at 1:00 pm (CST).
40 Years and Michael Johnson in ConcertMichael Johnson, the singer, song-writer, storyteller, and guitarist who has delighted audiences at Gustavus Adolphus College annually for forty years, returns to Björling Recital Hall for a 40th Anniversary Concert Celebration, Friday, December 12 at 8:00 p.m. This performance on the Gustavus campus is one of only two performances the national recording artist will present in Minnesota this season.
Director Gregory Aune and the St. Ansgar’s Men’s Chorus present their fall concert Sunday, November 23 at 3:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus. Sunday’s concert is free and open to the public.
Fall Jazz Concert at Gustavus SaturdayThe jazz ensembles from the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College combine efforts on Saturday, November 22, to present a concert in Bjorling Recital Hall on the Gustavus campus. Under the direction of guest director Adam Rossmiller, the Adolphus Jazz Ensemble and the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band begin this free concert at 7:30 p.m.
The Gustavus Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Paul Hill, will presents its fall concert on Sunday, November 23, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The performance, held in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall, is free and open to the public.
