The Gustavus campus has attracted nearly 150 species of birds, including several rare species. The arboretum serves not only as a haven for these birds, but also as a migration fueling stop and is a prime breeding habitat for several species. Bob will teach how to identify birds by sight and sound. Binoculars will be provided.

Tim Nolan was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1954. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1978 with a B.A. in English. He and his wife Kate moved to New York City in 1978 where he obtained an M.F.A. degree in writing from Columbia University, worked as an archivist at the Whitney Museum, and read the poetry slush pile for Paris Review. He returned to Minnesota in 1985 and received his J.D. degree from William Mitchell College of Law in 1989. He is currently a partner with the Minneapolis law firm, Rider Bennett LLP, where he practices in construction and real estate litigation. His poems have appeared in The Nation, Ploughshares, Poetry East, and other journals. He recently published an article in the South Dakota Law Review entitled "Poetry and the Practice of Law" which can be found under his name at Rider Bennett's web site (www.riderlaw.com).

]]> Mon, 20 Oct 2008 Two-Part 10-Passsenger Van Training http://gustavus.edu/news/calendar/announcement/15192?ran=1020000000 http://gustavus.edu/news/calendar/announcement/15192?ran=1020000000 Announcement In an effort to meet the needs of busy students and employees of Gustavus, the Department of Safety and Security is pleased to announce a new two-part 10-Passenger Van Training Course. Part 1 of the course now consists of a 30-minute online course with 2 tests. This course can be taken online at times that are convenient to the participant. Part 2 of the course consists of a brief overview of the Gustavus10-Passenger Van Policy as well as a hands-on driving course.

The process is as follows:

Part 1:

Email your name, student/employee ID#, email address, and phone number to jstratma@gustavus.edu. Within 3 business days, you will receive a username and password to complete the online training. Participants must pass two online exams with a 90% or better. Once the online course is completed, print out the Certificate of Completion and bring it with you to Part 2 of the course.

Part 2:

Once you have completed Part 1, look at the calendar posted on www.gustavus.edu to see when the next scheduled van training is. When you have located a date that fits into your schedule, contact the Department of Safety and Security at extension 8888 and give them your name, email address, phone number, and student/employee ID# and request to sign up for Part 2 of the course. At the scheduled time, participants will attend a brief overview of the Gustavus 10-Passenger Van Policy as well as drive a van. It is required that participants bring their Certificate of Completion for the online portion of the course as well as a valid driver's license prior to completing Part 2 of the course.

Once participants have completed both Part 1 and Part 2, they will be awarded a wallet-sized verification card.

Over the past two years Doug has coordinated excavations at Fort Ridgely State Park. They have unearthed thousands of artifacts, the oldest of which date back 4,000 years.
